Combining Two Records ( STORED PROCEDURE )

I have a table with more than 6000 records. The table contains, FIRSTNAME,
LASTNAME, ADDRESS, TELEPHONE,...
Now i have added a new column in the table, naming it FULLNAME. In this i
want to insert the FIRSTNAME and the LASTNAME
combined with a space in between, the rest all remaining the same. How will
i do it?Is it possible with a Stored Procedure?
I am using SQL SERVER 2000 as my database. PLEASE HELP ME.

But, why do you need to store this? You can create a view with the concatenation, or expose a

first name or last name.

You might want to wrap them in IsNull so that a NULL in one of the columns
doesn't NULL out the entire result:
Select IsNull(FirstName, '') + ' ' + IsNull(MiddleName, '') + ' ' +
IsNull(LastName, '') As FullName from MyTable

Try:
alter table dbo.MyTable
add

combining 2 or more columns "as" one column in a select statement

hi guys,
how do u combine 2 columns as one in a select statement such as:
"select firstname,lastname from tablename"
where firstname and lastname are to be combined as single column called name
.
i had difficulty finding other resources for this issue.
Thanks in advance,
AdsString concatenation. The + symbol concatenates strings in SQL. So
your example would be something like:
select rtrim(firstname) + ' ' + rtrim(lastname) as [name] from
tableowner.tablename
or
select rtrim(lastname) + ', ' + rtrim(firstname) as [name] from
tableowner.tablename
The rtrim() function just trims off trailing whitespace (I'm assuming
there wont be any leading whitespace but you can take care of that too
with ltrim()), so you don't end up with something like "John
Smith " or "Smith , John ". The rest just depends exactly
what string you want at the end of it.

in SQL server.
So my version would look like:
SELECT ISNULL(FirstName, '') + ' ' + ISNULL(LastName, '')
FROM TableName
Now if you want to get fancy you could throw a check in there to only output
the space if both names are present. At that point though I might use a udf
SELECT dbo.udfGetFullName(TablePK)
FROM TableName
Where the udf performs the logic required to properly format the name.

Combinig fields

Hi all,
In Access I can do a simply query and put something like:
SELECT FirstName & ", " & LastName AS FullName FROM People
doing this woud combine the two fields into one... can this be done in a SQL
stored procedure?

Use the + operator to combine columns...just make sure that you don't add

Here are a few that come to mind:
CREATE TABLE #foo (col1 char(5), col2 char(5))
INSERT INTO #foo (col1, col2) VALUES ('test', null)
INSERT INTO #foo (col1, col2) VALUES ('test1', 'test1')
GO
SELECT col1 + ' ' + col2 FROM #foo=20
SELECT col1 + ' ' + ISNULL(col2, '') FROM #foo
SELECT col1 + ' ' + COALESCE(col2, '') FROM #foo
SELECT col1 + ' ' + CASE WHEN col2 IS NULL THEN '' ELSE col2 END FROM =

combine to varchar field when on is null

When we combine to varchar field when on is null,
like
Select FirstName+ LastName as FullName..
if FirstName is null, then FullName will be null.
How can we combine to varchar field when on is null, and the result will be
the non-null field?Select COALESCE(FirstName, '') + COALESCE(LastName, '') as FullName

Column Names of Fulltext search result

I was trying to do full text search. I have no problem to do the search as
following:
select MemberID, Surname, Firstname from members where FREETEXT(*, N'moore')
It returned all rows for any column containing values that match the
meaning, but not the exact wording, of the text 'moore'.
My problem is that my client want to know the name(s) of the column(s) which
the keyword 'moore' was found. How can I get the required info?
And I also tried FREETEXTTABLE, which only returns a relevance ranking value
(RANK) and full-text key (KEY) for each row. Same things using CONTAINS or
CONTAINSTABLE
Thanks in advance.
To get an exact search, ie moore, but not moores wrap your freetext search
in double quotes or use contains, ie
select MemberID, Surname, Firstname from members where FREETEXT(*,
N'"moore"')
You can't easily get the column where the hit occurs. You would have to do
something like this
create table members(MemberID int identity not null, surname varchar(20),
firstname varchar(20), constraint memberspk primary key (memberid))
GO
insert into members(surname, firstname) values('moore','moore')
insert into members(surname, firstname) values('moore','dave')
insert into members(surname, firstname) values('dave','moore')
insert into members(surname, firstname) values('dave','dave')
GO
sp_fulltext_database 'enable'
GO
create fulltext index on members(surname, firstname) key index memberspk
GO
select *, case
when charindex('moore',surname)>0 and charindex('moore',firstname)=0 then
'surname'
when charindex('moore',surname)=0 and charindex('moore',firstname)>0 then
'Firstname'
when charindex('moore',surname)>0 and charindex('moore',firstname)>0 then
'both'
else 'not sure'
end From members where contains(*,'moore')

|||Hilary,
Thank you for your reply. I thought about this way too, but I have problem
with it. I had more than 50 columns to be searched, which means I have to
'when' more than 50 times, actually lots more than 50 times if I need the
column combinations, such as your 'both' case.
I was wondering if there is a straight forward way to do so. If no, I guess
I have to do some programming...
Thanks,

|||You could also limit your FT query to a certain column.
For example
select MemberID, Surname, Firstname from members where
contains(surname,'moore')
and do the same for every fulltext indexed column in your table and then
combine the results.
Thanks
